Inforamtion on Swine Influenza

The World Health Organisation (WHO) is coordinating the global response to human cases of swine influenza A (H1N1) and monitoring the corresponding threat of an influenza pandemic. Comprehensive advice and information on the current situation can be found on the WHO website.

The Department of Health website gives further information on what the UK is doing in response to the outbreak. The Health Protection Agency has provided advice on measures which can be taken to prevent infection. General infection control practices and good respiratory hand hygiene can help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including the human swine influenza. This includes:

  • covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, using a tissue when possible
  • disposing of dirty tissues promptly and carefully
  • maintaining good basic hygiene, for example washing hands frequently with soap and water to reduce the spread of the virus from your hands to face or to other people
  • cleaning hard surfaces (e.g. door handles) frequently using a normal cleaning product
  • making sure your children follow this advice.

In common with all our overseas missions we have a flu contingency plan for the Embassy so that we can try to maintain a basic consular service during the crisis should it directly affect Estonia.  As at 8th of May there have been three confirmed cases of swine influenza in Estonia. However until such time as we are faced with the realities of such an outbreak it will be difficult to forecast exactly what we will be able to provide.  Please be assured that plans are in place to ensure that the community is kept up to date with regular updates on the Embassy website (www.ukinestonia.fco.gov.uk)

Those British nationals working in Estonia should speak to their employers about plans they have in place. Such plans may include access to anti-viral treatment for employees and/or repatriation to the UK.

Many countries may have limited availability of anti-viral drugs.

Further information can also be found on the World Health Organisation www.who.int/en/, specifically at their swine influenza site: http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swineflu/en/index.html .

The British Embassy recommends that you continue to monitor the local media, Embassy (www.ukinestonia.fco.gov.uk) and FCO websites (www.fco.gov.uk) for updates.

You can also check for the updates on the swine flue cases through the Estonian Ministry of Social Affairs website www.sm.ee (in Estonian and English), the Estonian Health Protection Inspectorate website www.tervisekaitse.ee (in Estonian) or via designated swine flu telephone hotline in Estonia +372 5102270.
